Radek’s Story: When New Beginnings Turn into Opportunities

Radek Šimek is proof that it’s never too late to choose the right path – even if you start out in a different direction. From sports and mathematics to ski school, toolmaking and design – his story is shaped by determination, perseverance and a love of learning. Today, he works as a Project Manager and shows that every big dream begins with a single step.

From Athlete to Engineer: An Unconventional Career Path

Radek’s journey began at the eight-year high school in Králíky, where he successfully graduated in 2007. Even then, he was fascinated by the combination of physical activity and logical thinking, which led him to study Physical Education and Mathematics at the Faculty of Sports Science. He completed his bachelor’s degree in 2011.

After his studies, he initially pursued a more sports-oriented and organizational path – he managed sports activities and a ski school at a mountain resort, where he worked for two years. He then tried his hand at marketing entrepreneurship but gradually realized that this path didn’t truly fulfill him. In 2014, he made a decisive change: Radek shifted his focus to the technical field, enrolled in Process Engineering, and at the same time joined weba as an assistant toolmaker.

A year later, he advanced into the role of toolmaker. Step by step, he immersed himself deeper into the world of tool manufacturing, customer communication, and on-site assignments. He discovered that this was where his real passion lay. Theory and practice complemented each other perfectly: what he learned in school, he could immediately apply at work, while practical experience helped him better understand the theory. Thanks to his excellent performance, he also received strong support from the company. Although balancing work and studies was very demanding, he mastered this challenging period successfully. In 2017, he completed his bachelor’s degree and moved into design engineering. Two years later, he finished his master’s degree and was promoted to Senior Design Engineer. He worked in this role for four years, gaining valuable experience and deepening his understanding of processes and technologies.

At some point, however, he felt it was time for a new challenge. He decided to try working at another company to gain new perspectives. After a year, he realized that his heart still belonged to weba – the place where it all began and where he truly felt “at home.” When the opportunity arose to return – this time in the responsible role of Project Manager – he did not hesitate. Today, in this position, he combines technical expertise, analytical thinking, and systematic project management.

Radek says that what excites him most about working as a Project Manager is the variety: every day brings new challenges, situations, and opportunities to learn – whether in technical details, analytical tasks, or working with people. It is precisely this combination of technology, analysis, and human interaction that gives his work meaning and fulfillment.

Balance Is the Key to Success

For Radek, family comes first – he loves spending his free time with his wife and their two young children. Setting clear boundaries is important to him: at work he is 100% focused on his job, while at home his full attention belongs to his family.

He shares his passion for biketrial and MTB with his son and is already looking forward to the day when his little daughter joins them on the trails. What he enjoys most is being active together as a family, overcoming obstacles, and feeling a touch of adrenaline. “When you’re racing downhill through the forest at 40 km/h with your son, weaving between the trees – that’s a real adrenaline rush!” he says with enthusiasm.

Radek’s Advice for Young Professionals

When asked what advice he would give to young people, Radek replies: “Don’t be afraid to set big goals. Even if they seem far away, the path can be broken down into smaller steps that you can master one by one. The important thing is to get started, have a vision, and persevere. Persistence and patience will eventually take you where you want to be.”

Radek’s career shows that a professional path is not always a straight line. Often, exciting detours, new interests, and fresh experiences lead you to where you truly feel at home. Step by step, he found his place – proving that perseverance and openness to new opportunities ultimately make the difference.

A quote that has accompanied Radek on his journey: “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” – Laozi
